TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM FOUNDATION

The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation is a South African non-profit, public benefit organisation (PBO) focused on inspiring people to take action for the ocean, and building connections between communities and the marine ecosystem.

Founded in 2019, the Foundation continues the legacy of marine sciences education, conservation and research efforts of the Two Oceans Aquarium – a key player in environmental awareness, action, and passion in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.

The Foundation continues to expand its wide range of public benefit activities while increasing positive social and environmental impact through sharing information and inspiring behaviour change.

TURTLE RESCUE, REHABILITATION & RELEASE

In the wild, only one or two out of every 1 000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood - these figures are now even worse due to the increased pollution, climate change, and other hazards caused by human activity.

The Turtle Conservation Centre works to ensure that endangered sea turtles are protected and teams are working around the clock to improve these statistics and contribute to the recovery of sea turtle numbers worldwide.

The teams continue to improve treatment protocols and have achieved an incredible 85% release rate.

The data collected has been written up in various post-graduate studies and publications, and the team continues to contribute to the growing global knowledge base of turtle rehabilitation and treatment plans.

The highlight of every rescue season is releasing healthy turtles back into the ocean and the team celebrates each rescuer, all the rehabilitation support, and each turtle survivor.

Oceans Alive Conservation Trust is proud to be part of the Turtle Rescue Network and a major sponsor of the Turtle Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release program at the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation.

During 2021 we sponsored two orphan turtle hatchlings, namely Freedom #1 and Freedom #2, for the duration of their rehabilitation and release.

During 2022 we sponsored no less than twenty orphan turtle hatchlings, namely Oceans #1 to Oceans #20, for the duration of their rehabilitation and release.

We are honoured to be a part of such an amazing and very successful initiative and will continue to support all the Turtle Rescue, Rehabilitation and Rescue programs throughout Southern Africa and globally, towards clean oceans and marine wildlife protection and conservation.

A collaborative relationship with the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation allows us to graduate our Oceans Alive Conservation Trust Commercial Divers at the aquarium, doing their final dives in the I&J exhibition tank.
